Carmelite Monastery • Signage System

SIGNAGE SYSTEM
Carmelite Monastery, Budapest

As part of the ongoing overall renovation, the historic building received a new, elevated interior recently. The architects created a delicate, nuanced atmosphere, with the use of quality materials like wood and limestone, and a harmonic and restrained colour palette. The aim of the wayfinding system was to fit in with this environment and create a sublime and elegant signage with the use of natural materials, but also creating a contrast with the modern and minimal graphic design.
The thick, acid-etched and deep sand blown glass panels are made and painted individually by hand, and they refer back to the colour aesthetics of the walls. We created a holy feeling like they are floating by the invisible distancing from the walls. They are in constant change with the sunlight during the day. On the exterior of the monastery, we created cut-out weatherproof metal signs.
The creation of the pictogram set was a real challenge, considering the unique, catholic and religious terms. In addition to the useful signage, we were asked to decorate the institution with other symbolic graphics and illustrations as well.

We won the Red Dot Award: Brands & Communication Design 2022 with this project.
